How to help the Foundation

The Foundation does not receive government grants. It relies entirely on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations, and other donors in order to reach its objectives and to carry out its mission.

Through the years, it has created and developed various fundraising activities such as:

March Drive Campaign
In 1979, the government of Canada officially prochaimed the month of March as Kidney Month. The March Drive Campaign of The Kidney Foundation of Canada has since become the organization's most important public fundraising activity. Each year, during the month of March, some 8,000 volunteers across Quebec solicit neighbours, parents, friends, and colleagues in order to collect donations in support of people living with kidney disease.

Halloween Campaign
This activity has been in existence for the past 30 years; it is the The Kidney Foundation of Canada's oldest fundraising campaign. Each Fall, thousands of volunteers raise funds by selling products such as peanuts and Life Savers lollipops. The campaign begins in mid-August and ends in November.

If you wish to order sweets or lend a helping hand during this campaign, please fill out the form and return it to us by fax, by mail, or by e-mail.

Kidney-Car Program
First launched in the Greater Montreal area in May 1995, the goal of the Kidney-Car Program is to raise funds through the donation of vehicules that are automatically sold by the Foundation to recyclers. Donors benefit from an income tax receipt of a minimal value of $50. Since March 1996, the Kidney-Car Program covers the major part of Quebec.

Donations In Memoriam

Donations In Memoriam allow to support the mission of The Kidney Foundation of Canada while honoring the memory of a loved one. The Foundation sends a card of sympathy to the family of the deceased and informs them that a donation was made, without mentioning the amount. To make a donation In Memoriam or to order leaflets, see the form.

Tribute Donations (in honor of a person, a celebration, a wedding, etc.)

Donations can be made to the Foundation in order to underline the anniversary of a person, an event, or for any other occasion. The Foundation will send a card to the person or to the organization informing them that a donation was made in their honor, without mentioning the amount, and indicating the name of the donor.

Special Events

Depending on the region, events such as Golf Tournaments, Gala-Dinners, Spaghetti Dinners, etc., allow to raise thousands of dollars every year while increasing the population's awareness to our mission. For further information, visit the page of your local Chapter of the Foundation.

Planned Giving

There are numerous ways to make a donation to The Kidney Foundation of Canada. Many think that you have to be wealthy to be able to make a major donation to the Foundation. However, by planning your gifts, it is possible to increase the value of your donation to the Foundation.

Planned Giving: So Many Opportunities
The Kidney Foundation of Canada is committed to improving the health and quality of life of those who live with kidney disease. You can make a tangible contribution to the success of this mission through Planned Giving.

Planned Giving is an opportunity for you to make a difference with your estate. In most cases, it allows you to give, and be recognized for, a far more significant gift than your current income might allow.

We have outlined a variety of Planned Giving options and the opportunities offered to support The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Should you need further information and assistance in the matter, we invite you to contact:

You could also send an order form to obtain literature on Planned Giving.

Charitable Gifts and Bequests

Estate planning represents an effective way to protect the financial security of your loved ones. Your will ensures that even after your death, you will maintain absolute control over the distribution of your estate. It means that your wishes will be respected, without creating additional heartache and unnecessary legal tangles for your loved ones. For many individuals, a will also provides a means of continuing a commitment to a worthy charitable organization such as The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

To help you to write your will, The Kidney Foundation of Canada has prepared some documentation which will enable you to gather all the information you need in preparing your will.

The Gift of Life Insurance

By making The Kidney Foundation of Canada the owner and irrevocable beneficiary of a life insurance policy, you can plan a generous gift while gaining tax credits, and even reducing the financial burden of carrying an insurance policy. Whether you give a new or existing policy, the cash surrender value is considered to be a charitable donation, making your gift much larger than the cost of any premiums. At the same time, premium payments still owing are recognized with income tax credits, which offset a large portion of the premiums.

A gift of life insurance offers benefits beyond the financial. It is independent of any bequest you wish to leave your loved ones in your will, and it forwards the amount payable to the Foundation rapidly without affecting your estate.

The Gift-in-Kind

A Gift-in-kind allows you to support the mission of the Foundation with a non-cash gift such as real estate, securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc.), jewellery or works of art. In some cases, you donate the item, receive tax benefits, and continue to use and enjoy the item during your lifetime.

Changes announced in the Federal Government's recent budgets make it more attractive than ever to donate gifts of publicly traded equities.

Tax credits can be claimed for a certain percentage of your net income for the current year and may be carried forward for up to five years.
We suggest that you seek the advice of your financial or legal consultant to determine how a gift-in-kind would affect your estate.

The Charitable Gift Annuity

You can create a charitable gift annuity and retain the income while appointing the Foundation as the irrevocable beneficiary. In most cases a charitable tax receipt can be issued immediately. A portion of your gift will be used to finance the annuity income, while the remaining portion will support ongoing Foundation initiatives.

Beyond the satisfaction of contributing to a valuable cause, and the recognition that comes with it, donors who choose this Planned Giving option enjoy an increase in after-tax cash flow today, plus worry-free, guaranteed income tomorrow.

The Charitable Remainder Trust
If the idea of gifting property of substantial value while retaining the benefit of the income it generates appeals to you, a Charitable Remainder Trust may be the best Planned Giving option for you. Funded with cash, securities or real estate, you create the trust by making an irrevocable gift of the remainder interest to the Foundation. Only the Foundation can remove capital from the trust, which may be managed by you or by professional managers.

A Charitable Remainder Trust generates an immediate tax receipt. In addition, it allows the donor to use the annual income for life or a specified period of time. Other attractions of this type of gift are the confidentiality and certainty it provides. A Trust gift is not included in your estate and, unlike a bequest, it cannot be challenged in court.

The Endowment Fund

When you commit to The Kidney Foundation of Canada's Endowment Fund, you give the gift of a lifetime and positively affect the lives of thousands of individuals. Your gift to the Fund is held in perpetuity with the principal invested and only the income generated used to support the Foundation's vital programs. As a result, your gift continues to give, year after year.

You may designate your Endowment Fund gift to the mission of the Foundation, ensuring that the funding it provides will be applied where the need is greatest, or you may specify the program you wish to see benefit from your generosity. Either way, you can make your commitment confident that the value of your gift will be maximized over time by a respected investment management group, guided by the policies and procedures of The Kidney Foundation of Canada.

All these gift opportunities could enable The Kidney Foundation of Canada to fund research, offer patient services, and promote organ donation.

With the number of kidney patients increasing daily, our work must continue, and with the commitment of donors like you, it will. We urge you to contact the Executive Director if you require further information about Planned Giving opportunities, and we thank you in advance for your generous support.

Recognition
The Kidney Foundation of Canada pays special tribute to all individuals, corporations, foundations, and other friends who lend their support. Without their generosity as well as that of numerous volunteers, it would have been impossible to realize the many research projects and to ensure the quality of services indispensable to the well-being of people living with kidney disease.

On behalf of all kidney patients, thank you so much.
